Karma Nirvana is a progressive organisation, combining workshops, seminars, conferences and road shows to educate the public and inform political thinking on the unique aspects of honour-based violence.
It should also come as no surprise that at the core of our work is a commitment to individual freedom. We support the right of each and every person who we work with to determine their life, on their terms. We want them to know that they’re not alone – even though it probably feels that way.
Inspired by Enlightenment thinkers, we advocate democracy, reason, progress, liberty, the right to free expression and, most urgently of all, the proper application of critical thought to combat the ignorance and superstition which characterise relationships between men and women in honour-based communities.
Ultimately, we seek to enlighten the public mind by shining a lightinto the unseen violence taking place in pockets of our society.
Because honour-based abuse tends to unfold outside the mainstream gaze, an important aspect of our work is raising public awareness to make sure that anyone who is in a position to influence the public debate receives accurate, timely analysis and a direct line of communication to victims.
This is because we recognise that the consequences of honour-based violence are not limited to the individual: rather they permeate communities, destroying families and reinforcing unacceptable divisions in our society.
This also whywe put education at the heart of the work we do. While we aim to bring positive change to the lives of victims, we also demand that these changes are rendered possible by the co-operation of educators, policy-makers, politicians and safeguarding professionals. One of our key aims as a charity is to save the next generation from the cycle of honour-based abuse. We work tirelessly with education professionals to achieve safer outcomes for children and young people. To find out more, go to our next generation schools campaign.
Ultimately, we help men and women to find peace and enlightenment by giving them back the freedom to choose.
Equality, Freedom, Opportunity - they’re our values.
