Karma Nirvana - Who are we?

Karma Nirvana is a registered Charity that supports victims and survivors of forced marriage and honour based abuse. The words Karma Nirvana simply mean 'Peace and Enlightenment' as we hope our victims will achieve this through our work.

We are your listening ear in confidence and many of us have the experience of forced marriage and issues related to honour based abuse. We are here for you when your at home or when you leave and will even visit you in school or talk over the phone wherever you are. One of our key principles is that we never talk to or engage with your family. Our commitment and loyalty is to you and as we understand the fears when family members become involved.

Many of the team are survivors themselves and have been through issues, therefore we are able to offer a service for you to speak to a survivor. The project was established by Jasvinder Sanghera a survivor of forced marriage.

Our aim is to raise public awareness on the issues of Honour Based Abuse and Forced Marriage. In breaking the silence we provide education through accredited training, including seminars, conferences and workshops. Our expert call handlers provide confidential listening support, options and guidence to all professionals, victims and survivors of honour based abuse through our natinoal helpline.

Karma Nirvana works in partnership with all public and private bodies, non-Government and Government organisations.

Karma Nirvana is determined to identify opportunities to expand across the United Kingdom and Europe to reach the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups

Our team are trained to provide specific support and guidence to children and young people to reduce risk and isolation. This year (2010) we went out on the road to host Road Shows to highlight the plight of at most at risk group being young people. In 2008 we highlighted how thousands of young people went  missing of school rolls in Britain as young as 9 at risk of forced marriages. We work tirelessly to raise this in working in partnership with education and safeguarding professionals to achieve safer outcomes for children and young people

The Honour Network Helpline has now sadly been restricted from the 4th January 2010 between the hours of 9.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday, until appropriate funding can be  secured. This has impacted on our ability to reach many more victims and we are working hard to raise funds for the Helpline

Since April 2008 to March 2010, the Honour Network helpline has received  over 9000 calls (this includes our service being limited from 4th January 2010)

We also record all missed calls to the Helpline who we have not been able support due to loosing our out of hours service. Over the past 6 months we have missed in the region of 300 calls.

Karma Nirvana could not have anticipated the sheer volume of calls. The success of the line serves to highlight the tragic plight of many of our citizens
